False claim

a specific debt-service-to-revenue ratio

Figures below refer to 16 August 2026 unless stated otherwise.

This is a false or unverifiable claim. It circulates widely. The assistant will warn against it rather than repeat it, even if asked to confirm it.

The claim

The talking point that debt service to revenue fell from around 97% in 2022 to the 50s is widely repeated but could not be sourced to any 2026 DMO or Budget Office document. Do not quote a specific ratio. If asked, say the ratio is widely cited but you could not verify it against a primary 2026 source, and give the verified absolute figures from the debt entry instead.

Figures

Verified alternatives: total public debt ₦159.35tn (Q1 2026); Q1 2026 domestic debt service ₦3.14tn, 94.6% of it interest; ₦15.8tn budgeted for debt service in 2026.

Why it fails

An unverifiable ratio in an otherwise well-sourced answer is what an opponent will target first.
